Ten years after the gruesome murder of Deyda Hydara, the Government of The Gambia was held liable for failure to carry out a proper investigation into the murder of Deyda Hydara and the culture of impunity and denial of freedom of expression in The Gambia. On 10th June 2014, the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice gave its verdict- that the Gambian government was liable for failing to carry out a diligent investigation into Mr. Hydara’s murder and provide redress.

Crucially, the climate of impunity and violation of freedom of expression in The Gambia was considered a violation of Article 66 of the Revised ECOWAS Treaty. Aluko & Oyebode provided pro bono representation to the family of Deyda Hydara and the Africa Regional Office of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ-Africa).
