The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Interior (the Ministry) has introduced the “Brown Card”, a new legal document that confers permanent residency on qualified foreigners. Prior to the introduction of the brown card, foreign nationals resident in Nigeria had to renew their permanent residence permit in Nigeria every 2 years or 5 years depending on the class of visa they obtain.

The following class of foreigners are qualified to apply for the brown card:

  1. – Foreign nationals of African descent who desire to make Nigeria their homeland through the “Privilege of Return”.
  2. – Foreign nationals who desire to invest in Nigeria in line with established guidelines.
  3. – Foreign nationals who have demonstrated exceptional talent, knowledge and skills in rare fields of science, technology, medicine, engineering, arts, sports and other areas as might be determined from time to time.
  4. – Male foreign nationals married to Nigerian women for a minimum period of one year.

The specific details for the application and process for obtaining the brown card are yet to be published by the Nigerian Immigration Service.
