Background

The National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (“NOTAP”) is responsible for monitoring, regulating and facilitating the inflow of foreign technology in Nigeria. NOTAP’s mandate is implemented primarily through the evaluation and registration of technology transfer agreements which are required to be submitted to NOTAP within 30 days from the effective date.

The agreements that are subject to NOTAP’s regulation in Nigeria include agreements relating to hotel management, trademarks license, software license, value added services, shared services, management services, technical know-how and franchise.

Prior to registration, NOTAP evaluates these agreements in terms of their legal, economic and technical benefits to the Nigerian economy.

Automation of the Application Process

In line with the ease of doing business initiative of the Federal Government, NOTAP has been implementing reforms to ease the application process for registration of agreements. NOTAP recently announced the introduction of the automated platform for registration of technology transfer registrations. Thus, with effect from 2 September 2019, applications can be submitted online through NOTAP’s online portal at https://techreg.notap.gov.ng/VendorReg and http://www.notap.gov.ng/.
